To build and develop a creative attitude and personality in the field of recording media arts, and to be able to develop the art existence and nationalism in facing globalization era.
OBJECTIVE
To produce the undergraduate experts in the field of photography, television, and diploma expert in animation who retain high competence in competitive atmosphere, high creativity, innovative, responsive to society demand, good enterpreneurship and professionalism in their fields.
Photography Undergraduate Program is one part of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts, Indonesia Institute of Arts Yogyakarta which concentrates on learning the photography study field. The program is able to create photography artworks which has cultural value and national personality. Graduates of Photography Department are strongly having the abilities in theoritical study, and artwork creating.
Photography Department projects the professional graduates mastering theories, knowledge, technology, and photography technique, and has the competences in their main expertise such as: expression photography, (oriented on the photographer of personal expression), commercial photography ( a photography directed to photography of professional service ), and journalism photography (news photography related to mass media).
Photography Department has an Internship program which gives an opportunity to the students to implement their abilities, knowledge, and experience they get in the field, to increase their creativity and enrich their professional experience in the expertise field and strengthen the networking with stakeholders. Moreover, to fulfill Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the three obligations of higher education), Photography Department holds a commitment to society by organizing many kinds of art workshops.
A BRIEF PROFILE
Photography as one of the applied sciences is a medium to reveal some visual phenomena in order to fulfill many of people’s interests. In complimance with that, the presence of photography in human civilization has shaped a visual discourse which has a special characteristic and its own concept and stream. Photography discourse finally grows up fast and has the extensive advantage to develop the related fields.
As the role and the demand of knowledge development in many fields, and the demand of society necessity for photography, Photography Department increases its education quality as the response. The improvement of quality is based on the spirit to develop the creativity and innovation in creating the artworks through a proper and up-to-date curriculum. In the higher education autonomy era, the developing of new curriculum has been realized based on the Photography Department competence approach which refers to the decision note of the Ministery of Education and Culture number: 232/U/2001 about the Guidelines of Curriculum Disposition for Higher Education and Study Result Evaluation and the Ministery of Education and Culture decision note number 045/U/2002 about Core Curriculum of Higher Education.
As the result, Photography Department, Faculty of Recording Media Arts, Indonesia Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta, has many alumnae who work in all over Indonesia in many kinds of professions, as teaching staffs or professional workers. Those are the proofs that photography takes place in the art field of a nation’s developing process.

Photography Department is an education institution which is able to produce professional art graduates who work professionally in their field based on the knowledge, aesthetic, and technology to strengthen the nationalism in globalization era.

STRATEGIES
To achieve its objectives, Photography department sets up some strategies :
• Organizing the education in photography field based on the knowledge, technology, art and photography techniques which are continually growing and changing along with the changing of the equipments technology;
• Learning system with a balance learning system between theory and practice;
• Implementing researches and services to wide society in photography field;
• Nurturing the students’ concentration to their ablilities to study and create an artwork in photography field;
• Improving the education system quality, education implementation, and the quality of graduates;
• Creating good cooperation with private institutions and government institutions which provide photography field of interest.
ACADEMIC ATMOSPHERE
Photography department provides a conducive academic atmosphere, comfortable with proper facilities, and relevant teaching staffs who are competent in photography field supporting the upgrading of learning-teaching process. The active interaction between students and teaching staffs support the shaping of the academic atmosphere as well.
FACILITIES
Photography Department studio is equiped with qualified equipments which refers to professional standard and development demand for today’s necessity. The facilities provided are, such as, large format camera (Sinar F2), medium format camera (Mamiya RZ, Mamiya 645 AFD II, Fuji GX680), indoor photo studio, nature studio, darkroom, digital Large Format Printer studio, and digital photo editing studio.
LEARNING-TEACHING PROCESS
The learning –teaching process is implemented into theoritical and practical classes which both synergycally and continously. The learning methods are classical, practical, discussion, seminars, workshops, comparison study, and internship program which will increase the motivation of the students to increase their competences.
